- The .280 Ackley Improved is a modern cartridge based on the original .280 Remington. It was designed by the renowned gunsmith, P.O. Ackley, in the early 1940s and has since become a popular choice for long-range hunters seeking improved accuracy and higher velocities than what is offered by standard factory rounds. The .280 AI offers increased case capacity due to its slightly longer case length and sharper shoulder angle. This allows it to get more of its propellant behind the bullet, resulting in higher velocities compared to the original .280 Remington. This increased velocity can result in flatter trajectory and better terminal performance on target at extended ranges.
When aggregating the ballistic performance of 160 suitable bullets for this caliber, you get an average powder charge of 53.1gr | 3.44g , an average muzzle velocity (V0) of 2719fps | 829m/s , and an average muzzle energy (E0) of 3674 Joule.
