- The .30 Remington (or .30 Rem) is a centerfire rifle cartridge introduced in 1906 by the Remington Arms Company. It was designed as a direct competitor to the popular .30-30 Winchester cartridge and intended for use in Remington's line of semi-automatic and pump-action rifles, particularly the Remington Model 8. The .30 Remington has similar ballistic performance to the .30-30 Winchester, firing a .308-inch diameter bullet at velocities ranging from 2,000 to 2,500 feet per second, depending on bullet weight and load. It is a rimless cartridge, which makes it different from the rimmed .30-30 Winchester, allowing for more reliable feeding in semi-automatic and pump-action firearms. Although it had moderate popularity in the early 20th century, the .30 Remington eventually lost ground to other cartridges, such as the .30-06 Springfield and .308 Winchester. Production of rifles chambered in .30 Remington ceased by the mid-20th century, and ammunition for the cartridge became scarce. Today, the .30 Remington is considered obsolete, but it remains a notable part of firearm history, especially for collectors of early Remington rifles and vintage ammunition enthusiasts. Some handloaders still produce custom rounds for it today.
