- The .318 Rimless Nitro Express Westley Richards (N.E.W.R.) is a cartridge developed by firearms manufacturer Westley Richards in the early 1900s using components from other cartridges such as .318 Belted Nitro Express and .318 Westley Richards cases. This combination offered hunter a powerful, flat shooting option in a light-weight package suitable for taking down large game animals at extended ranges.
The N.E.W.R., like its parent cartrages has rimless brass cases measuring 2 1/2 inches in length and is able to achieve velocities of up to 2,700 fps which offers excellent ballistics out to greater distances with flatter trajectories compared to other similar calibers from this era such as the .303 British or .30-06 Springfield cartridges that were more commonly used at the time.
This cartridge is rarely seen on the modern market due to its limited availability, but can still be found if you look hard enough and is available in both factory loaded ammunition as well as handloaded varieties for use in specialty firearms built specifically for this round such as those made by Dickson & Rosser and Charleville Gunmakers among others. When aggregating the ballistic performance of 113 suitable bullets for this caliber, you get an average powder charge of 52.2gr | 3.38g , an average muzzle velocity (V0) of 2339fps | 713m/s , and an average muzzle energy (E0) of 3714 Joule.
