- The .38 S&W, also known as the .38 Colt New Police, is a revolver cartridge that was introduced in 1877 by Smith & Wesson. It was designed for use in small frame revolvers and was used by law enforcement agencies in the United States and other countries in the early 20th century.
The .38 S&W cartridge has a bullet diameter of .361 inches and a case length of .775 inches. It has a relatively low velocity of around 700 feet per second and a relatively low muzzle energy, making it suitable mainly for short-range self-defense applications.
