  • The .404 Rimless Nitro Express cartridge, also known as the .404 Jeffery, is a centerfire rifle cartridge that was developed by W.J. Jeffery & Co. in the early 1900s. It is a popular big game cartridge that is primarily used for hunting large, dangerous game in Africa.

The .404 Rimless Nitro Express cartridge features a rimless brass case with a bullet diameter of .423 inches (10.74 mm) and a case length of 2.90 inches (73.66 mm). It typically uses a 400- to 450-grain (26 to 29 g) bullet propelled by a smokeless powder charge, which gives it a muzzle velocity of around 2,200 to 2,400 feet per second (670 to 730 meters per second) and a muzzle energy of around 4,500 to 5,000 foot-pounds (6,100 to 6,800 joules).

The .404 Jeffery cartridge was designed to provide hunters with a cartridge that had similar ballistics to the .416 Rigby cartridge, but with a smaller and lighter package that could be used in a variety of firearms, including bolt-action rifles and double rifles. It is a popular cartridge for hunting large game such as elephant, buffalo, and lion.

Today, the .404 Jeffery cartridge is considered to be a classic big game cartridge and is still used by hunters and shooters around the world. It is also a popular cartridge for African hunting safaris.
