  • The .505 Gibbs or Magnum Gibbs is a large caliber rifle cartridge that was introduced by the English gunmaker George Gibbs in the early 20th century. It was designed for use on big game, particularly in Africa, and is known for its stopping power and accuracy at long ranges.

The .505 Gibbs cartridge fires a .505" diameter bullet and has a case length of 3.6 inches. It operates at a maximum average pressure of 47,000 psi and can launch a 525-grain bullet at velocities of up to 2,300 feet per second, generating over 6,800 foot-pounds of muzzle energy.

The .505 Gibbs is a very powerful cartridge and is capable of taking down the largest and most dangerous game animals in Africa, such as elephant, Cape buffalo, and hippopotamus. However, due to its recoil and the cost of ammunition, it is not widely used for hunting and is primarily used by professional hunters and collectors.

The .505 Gibbs has a reputation for accuracy and has been used to set world records for long-range shooting. It is also popular with handloaders who enjoy developing custom loads for their rifles.
