- The 7.62x39mm (.308) Russian cartridge is a type of intermediate rifle round developed in the Soviet Union during World War II, and is still widely used today.
The 7.62x39mm utilizes a 123 grain full metal jacketed bullet that produces velocities over 2,300 feet per second at the muzzle with an energy level of 1,555 ft/lbs – making it a powerful and effective rifle round for intermediate-range engagements and even hunting medium sized game animals. The relatively low recoil also makes it suitable for use in semi-automatic platforms, greatly increasing its rate of fire compared to more traditional bolt action rifles chambered in similar calibers.
Since its introduction in 1943, this cartridge has become one of the most widely used rifle rounds in the world – being adopted by numerous militaries and police forces around the globe as their standard service firearm’s cartridge of choice. It is also popular amongst civilian shooters who want a more powerful option than most conventional pistol cartridges while still remaining controllable enough to be used without too much difficulty or training requirements.
