- The 7.62x53R Finnish cartridge is a type of full-sized rifle round developed in Finland during World War II, and is still widely used today.
The 7.62x53R utilizes a 175 grain full metal jacketed bullet that produces velocities over 2,400 feet per second at the muzzle with an energy level of 2,886 ft/lbs – making it a powerful and effective rifle round for long range engagements and even hunting large game animals. The relatively low recoil also makes it suitable for use in semi-automatic platforms, greatly increasing its rate of fire compared to more traditional bolt action rifles chambered in similar calibers.
Since its introduction in 1939, this cartridge has become one of the most widely used rifle rounds in the world – being adopted by numerous militaries and police forces around the globe as their standard service firearm’s cartridge of choice. It is also popular amongst civilian shooters who want a more powerful option than most conventional pistol cartridges while still remaining controllable enough to be used without too much difficulty or training requirements.
