- The 8x57 IRS is a rimmed sporting and hunting cartridge that was developed alongside its rimless brother, the 8x57 IS. It was designed to be used in breech break rifles and is based on the 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge. The bullet diameter of this cartridge is 8.22 mm (0.324 in).The CIP has approved the use of this cartridge for sporting purposes and it can be used for hunting as well as target shooting activities. It is important to note that it should only be used with appropriate firearms that are designed for this caliber size and pressure level, as using it with other firearms may cause serious injury or death due to excessive pressure levels being generated by the cartridge when fired from an incompatible firearm.
