- The 8.5 x 63 R caliber is a powerful round designed by Werner Reb in the late 1980s. It is based on the 30-06 case necked up to .338” (8.5mm), similar to the 338-06, and has a 1 in 10 inch rifling twist that can stabilize most bullets. This caliber is CIP listed and can be fire-formed from .35 Whelen, making it an ideal choice for hunting large game animals.
The 8.5 x 63 R caliber is known as a "thumper" due to its high energy levels, with 4.736 joules of energy at 0 meters, 3.804 joules at 100 meters, 3.395 joules at 150 meters, and 3.022 joules at 200 meters. It is also compatible with BRENNEKE 8,5x63 REB TOG rifle ammunition which weighs 14.6 grams and has a Recommended Zero Range of 167 m.
