- The 8.5x63 caliber is a powerful and versatile cartridge that has been gaining popularity in recent years. It was designed by Werner Reb and is based on the 30-06 case necked up to .338” (8.5mm). This makes it similar to the 338-06, but with a slightly (0.25 mm) rebated rim for Swedish heavy and medium machine guns.
The 8.5x63 is CIP listed and can be fire-formed from .35 Whelen, allowing it to use a .338 bullet while operating on medium pressure levels. The bullets of this diameter are especially widespread, making it easy to find every type and form from simple cup and core to premium lead-free bullets.
This cartridge is known for its power, with an RZR (Recommended Zero Range) of 167 m and energy [J] of 4.736 (0m) / 3.804 (100m) / 3.395 (150m) / 3.022 (200m). It's also known for its accuracy, making it ideal for hunting large game such as moose or elk at long range distances.
