- The 9mm Steyr (Roth) cartridge has a long and storied history that dates back more than 100 years. Originally designed for use in the Roth-Steyr M1907 service pistol of the Austro-Hungarian kaiserliche und königliche Armee cavalry, it quickly became one of the most widely used rounds in Europe during World War I.
The 9mm Steyr (Roth)'s high accuracy, low recoil characteristics made it ideal for close-quarters combat and self-defense. After the war, it continued to be popular with civilian shooters who appreciated its accuracy and power. Today, many competitive shooters still use the 9mm Steyr (Roth) as their preferred choice for target shooting competitions due to these same qualities. Additionally, some hunters may choose this round due to its impressive terminal ballistics.
