- The .460 Rowland is a high-performance handgun cartridge designed to enhance the power of a traditional .45 ACP, offering magnum-level ballistics while retaining compatibility with some .45 ACP firearms. Developed by Johnny Rowland in the late 1990s, it features a longer case length than the .45 ACP, which prevents chambering in standard .45 ACP barrels and ensures safety. Despite the increased case length, the .460 Rowland fits in modified .45 ACP pistols and revolvers with specific barrel and recoil spring upgrades. The cartridge is known for its impressive velocity and energy, significantly surpassing the .45 ACP in power. The .460 Rowland can achieve muzzle velocities around 1,300-1,500 feet per second and energy levels exceeding 700 foot-pounds, depending on bullet weight. This power enables it to perform well in hunting applications and self-defense situations, especially where deeper penetration and stopping power are critical. Though the .460 Rowland offers substantial ballistic advantages, it generates higher recoil and muzzle blast, making it less suitable for all shooters. It also requires modifications to firearms, such as stronger recoil springs and compensators, to handle the increased pressures safely.
